Although the IIS web server is a Windows OS feature, Linux hosting services can also run virtual machines on a Linux server and provide IIS server web service. There are a large number of operating systems services that are only available on Windows and not available on Linux based servers. As a result, a Linux hosting server business may need to use virtual machine to provide Windows based services. Virtual machines are available on Linux platform. The VMM that can be used is a KVM or a Xen based VMM. Both of these VMMs are open source. Clearly, the configuration of this VMM is likely to be more complicated but configuration of open source VMMs are like to simpler than closed source VMMs. From a business perspective, it allows the business owner to offer a myriad set of services even if the host operating system does not support all the services. It also provides the customer fault tolerance that is needed by the customer for mission critical usages.
